There are many ways people can be manipulated, and there are many reasons for the vulnerability enabling people to, in some cases, be transformed into a semblance of their original selves, wholly unrecognizable by friends or family. So it is a combination of life circumstances, cultural influences, and the karmic vulnerabilities that will determine whether people can be corrupted and to what extent. In addition, they must be persuaded to be greatly impassioned about a cause and to ignore common sense about personal consequences so they are willing to sacrifice everything, including their own lives, to carry out a heinous act of some kind. As it happens, despite the high regard reserved for those who volunteer for military duty to protect one's homeland, the actual mechanics of preparing human beings to take part in warfare requires a heavy level of manipulation and programming in the way they think and respond to commands as well as a reordering of priorities so they will not think like civilians but like future combatants.
