This was a dark spirit presence, but it is seared into his memory and is thus recallable as a kind of imprint on his psyche. It is no longer an actual spirit, but a remnant stored within the mind that is projected again on thinking of it, just in the way a recording of a human action or a spirit phenomenon can be projected and played over and over. It is a trick of the mind at this point and not a valid threat to him that needs further rescuing or removal. This is a healing need to be sure but not one of dire consequence or great urgency, other than its unpleasantness.
