He was indeed murdered and he was indeed cloned and this was applied to others in his family as well. This was because of the need for family units that can serve as impostors in particular circumstances as a disarming tactic. This is simply an extension of what is done routinely as part of the Mercenary Army Program, that people are used as templates to make many, many, clones as these are more expendable because they are quickly created and programmed, whereas a human recruit, to achieve the highest levels of service and reliability, requires years of training and grooming to enable them to carry out high-level missions.
