This was at once a self-protective as well as a self-rewarding exercise. In a prior lifetime, this person had experienced great poverty but was then given a precious gift that set him apart from all others in the community because it came from "on high" from "the powers that be" as a mark of distinction and a reward. This was also a ticket to a better life as he immediately was respected and supported by others around him. In displaying this trophy for all to see, it became a kind of badge of honor and status that ensured his acceptance and success. The deep subconscious mind in the current life, seeing that history, is attempting to recreate those dynamics and good feelings by purchasing a kind of iconic trophy he believes connotes status, and his deep subconscious wants everyone to see it by motivating him to not only treasure his possession but to put it on display, treat it lovingly, and lavish attention to keep it shiny and be noticed by everyone. So here, too, is a past life circumstance that lives on. It has a certain emotional appeal and inner satisfaction in carrying out this kind of daily ritual, but it is truly meaningless in terms of "having no practical value," so is a time-wasting tribute to a past that is over and done with, and that energy would be better spent doing something more productive. Many human follies have their origin in repeating past glories or working to prevent past nightmares from recurring.
