It is evident from this description he gave that not only would there be a period of darkness, but there would be a danger lurking about as well. Hence, the need to hunker down, stay inside, bar the entry of intruders by locking doors and windows, and to keep a low profile so as to not be noticed by not even looking out to see what might be happening outdoors. Such a need fits perfectly with the consequences of society coming to a halt. This could be because of war, but also be because of a technologic compromise which leaves people more vulnerable and isolated and at the mercy of other people with bad intentions who might prey on the helpless victims. As you know, with a disruption of such infrastructure, stores closed, supplies scarce and uncertain, and authorities overwhelmed, potentially, some people may become panicked and prone to break and enter stores to do looting of any food and other supplies they might lack, not knowing how long that dark period might last, and knowing that time might run out to grab something for themselves. Civil unrest can be a very dangerous experience leading to violence. So the prophecy fits the potential worst-case scenarios, at least for some areas where tensions might be higher and having a higher percentage of individuals who might already be criminals capable and willing to do almost anything to serve themselves.
