Saint Faustina wrote, “God demands great trust from souls.” This can seem like a paradox, for many people assume that trust is something you either have or do not have, that there is no “choice” involved. And that if a soul does not trust God, then how can such a soul give to God what they do not possess? What is Creator’s perspective?

The issue of trust and the ability to dispense it is far more complex than this simple saying reflects. In some respects, it is ill-defined because trust has many dimensions, it has many aspects of belief that must be in place in order for trust to be felt and acted upon. So for us to demand great trust from you is simply another way of saying you must believe in us in order for us to be truly with you in any kind of open interacting way. In the absence of belief in us, we must stand aside, stay in the background, and not make our existence known to you, and herein lies the difficulty—if you cannot believe in our existence, how can you trust us, that we are real, let alone that we might support you and be there when you need us to even save you from a dark fate when you are threatened? So this saying is important because it illustrates an important checkpoint, that when people do not trust in God, it is illustrating a lack of belief, and that is at once a challenge and opportunity for personal growth and development needing to be worked on and seen to in order to advance. An ideal and perfect life is one done with divine partnership all along the way. Without that, you will be less and there is no other substitute.
