This is a kind of bittersweet recognition that the divine is loving, but still there is the inner core belief that suffering is a path to holiness. The true meaning she had in mind for this is not that suffering is to be avoided but to be endured, even in the extreme, such that it will not lead to a personal reward of any kind. Her belief in the need for suffering was so deep and so absolute, she could not conceive of another path to God than through personal sacrifice, and she did not want to risk trying a shortcut, letting up on herself, out of fear it would bring a setback and take her further away from the divine, because of indulging in personal enjoyment and relief from suffering itself as an important goal and way to live. As we have discussed before, this is a perversion of thinking inculcated within her, and reinforced through much life experience, to believe that suffering is the point of existence and a necessary condition to become exalted and worthy of divine support and recognition, when it is exactly the opposite. Suffering will almost always be a roadblock to spiritual progress, it might be a motivation to seek divine partnership, and thus have a silver lining that brings about a tremendous benefit, but not as the goal of existence.
