You have seen intuitively, the process they use and why he is looking in the wrong place for a trail of clues back to the start of things becoming difficult for him. The problem is his own self, his own mind, the way it works, the level of concern and agitation about his circumstances, his vulnerability, and the intense suffering this has grown to become. When they approach a person to check on their status, it indeed is a question and answering session done within the deep subconscious to ask leading questions, even surreptitiously in the guise of a friend, to see what they say, what their attitudes and perspective might be. If they are passive and able to be manipulated, they pass the test. If they are defiant in resisting the outside suggestions or invoking a strong emotional reaction to being tested in some way, they will fail the test because they are still standing strong, wanting to be their own person and unwilling to be persuaded, and certainly not pushed around.
This is why it is difficult for people to have a control of how they appear to the interlopers, because it is a probing done outside their conscious awareness entirely, over which they will have no direct control, consciously. The targeted individuals can, indeed, go out and about and interact with the world without having to worry about being followed around and caught in the act, so to speak. This is why the interlopers don't much care where people go or what they do, because they regard all human activities as irrelevant to their power and control. What matters is whether humans will jump to their tune and stand at attention when challenged directly through a surreptitious inspection of their thoughts, attitudes, and feelings in the moment. That is how they take the temperature, so to speak, of where someone is with regard to vulnerability or resistance to being manipulated as a useful minion or, if on the list of targeted individuals, needing to have another object lesson in subservience, and this will lead to a follow-up to punish them.
