He is truly healing himself with the power of his own consciousness. What is taking place is an inner struggle with his karmic history. He has predisposing karmic issues from another lifetime that make him vulnerable to back pain, and his deep subconscious is well aware of the said details of all that happened and can easily relive the trauma of the experiences. And this triggers cellular memory within the body to cause a renewed expression of symptoms, at least in a general fashion. When he does this visual imagery exercise with the intention of strengthening his spine, he is overriding his own deep subconscious and the consciousness of cellular memory to say "no," something greater more powerful stronger and more healthy is being substituted and this is a message to the other levels of the mind that the body can let go of these symptoms and stand down. The fact that the karmic trauma is not actually being healed is what allows the pain to reoccur, requiring a renewed session of imagery to once again override the symptoms with new instructions from the conscious level of the mind. This nicely shows both the power of consciousness to make things happen, but also that without an understanding of all sources of consciousness, their motives, and mechanisms for repeatedly expressing karmic business that is unresolved, people will be at a disadvantage in understanding their own infirmities and how best to deal with them. Working on karmic repair for the underlying causes will always be more effective over the long term, even though it might take a while to show a benefit. It is the surest way to end the problem, if not in the current life, in future lives that might well see a recurrence again and again of the same problem.
