This is very much the case and has been amply shown by critics of the media using archival footage of many of today’s pundits and political figures having held opposite views on immigration, the presence of people who have entered the country illegally, and the consequences of criminality, and what society needs to do about the criminal element all being at odds with strong positions taken in the past and what they say today—that pointing fingers at such wrongdoing is actually a sign of racism by the dominant white culture needlessly criticizing people of color—and the media then going out of its way to champion their cause while dispensing with existing law and promoting many growing and intractable societal problems adding to homelessness, and a growing wealth gap in American society.
At the same time, it reawakens and fans the flames of suspicion about racial motives, and in stirring old passions, promotes racial preoccupation and bias towards seeing a racist motive all too often in everything that happens. This becomes self-reinforcing as it has deep historical roots, and once again, having reared its ugly head, will propel people into taking action against common sense, the established order, and even human decency at times, by mis-categorizing and shaming people who are innocent of any negative thinking or judgment about others, but simply wanting things to be orderly and to meet common sense criteria, especially when there are workable solutions to inequality. But that is not being offered or promoted and any attempt to rein in behavior labeled as racist at the outset and then the discussion becomes toxic.
This is a prescription for ongoing civil strife and discord that can worsen over time and cause giant rifts and subdivision of people by class and race, and keep people fighting and at odds with one another, and resulting in a massive gridlock within society. It used to be that what was promoted was political gridlock and the citizenry was simply rendered complacent through mind control manipulation. Whereas today, the gridlock extends to all of society, so people cannot join together in common cause because the groups and organizations one can join have become extremist in their views and it is actually dangerous to align oneself with the political cause because the cost is loss of the self and independent thinking. At a certain point, all in society will find they are in an actual war of ideas, emotions, and prejudices that has no solution because it is an artificial separation and division to begin with. So there is no way back, no way to counteract the process of discord causing a division in the human population, and no way to win.
