He is only self-sabotaging to the extent all humans do so in various ways because they become their own worst enemy at times from harboring negative beliefs as a consequence of their traumas they undergo—that is normal wounding through interacting with the slings and arrows of life. There are more serious negative influences at work here, as you suspected. He, indeed, is a targeted individual, and that stems from his history as someone here to uplift the world. He has done so in the past through music and is why he has this focus in the current life. So he is one of many who they have worked at sidelining all through his life to limit his progress and effectiveness in wanting to be a force for good and this has cost him greatly.
