Both of these things are true. Lost soul human spirits who can recall those in the living may well be thinking about them and yearning to be with them. This might be a dim remembrance done out of desperation to connect to something, anything that is familiar but may well be sensed by their loved ones, especially during the dream state because the intuitive gateway is accessed by the deep subconscious, and it may use what it sees to create dream experiences as a way of processing the incoming information. If this can be perceived by higher levels of the mind enacted upon, it can indeed be a useful source of knowledge and turn into a useful rescue mission when understood by the conscious level of the mind in recalling dream material and seeing the connection has a deeper meaning.
