You are mixing reality with human metaphor. The idea of a neural network is a contrivance of the neuroscientists and it has a useful purpose as it describes a sequence of events for which, in their minds, there must be a specific pathway, but this is not necessarily the case. If you think about a sequence of events and what it represents, it does not have to have a physical analog that is concretely defined, pre-existing, and must remain in place physically in order for those events to happen. The brain is actually much, much, more fluid than neuroscience understands. So that entire concept is not useful.
You can think of what the mentally ill exhibit in their thoughts and resulting behaviors as the consequence of the deep subconscious level of the mind carrying out its ruminations, and by virtue of their great level of perception through heightened stress in trying to grow a large antenna, so to speak, to tune into things of life and death importance, they may have been able to reach this deep level and tune into what is ongoing with inner conflict and fear. And that is what is coming to the surface. It is a raw exhibition of the inner working of the psyche which is often in turmoil from so many negative stimuli and unable to choose among the many dark possibilities that are witnessed from so many past times of torment.
So this illustrates why going to that level of the mind with healing imagery can be so powerful and will be of tremendous benefit for the mentally ill with hallucinations or delusional thinking. The level of the mind creating them must be reached and given an opportunity to choose a healing alternative to let go of the pain it is reacting to over and over and over again.
