Unfortunately, it is true that someone who is adept in the black arts can exert influence over another and, with enough focused intention, will be assisted by the darkness in adding greater power to that intention. Either singly or in combination with a larger dark agenda, this can have dire consequences, especially with someone who is ill-prepared to defend themselves, having been undermined and become weak, and that limited power to help the self can be the undoing of a person who may be overwhelmed by the onslaught of negativity sent their way. So individuals who are exceptionally vulnerable and weak, and become quite fragile, can be easy prey and even killed by a practitioner of black magic. This is only because the darkness is an aggregate force of many, many individual beings and when they lend their energy to a dark intention it can be a force to reckon with. The thing to keep in mind always is that the light outweighs the darkness and always will. So it is the absence of light that creates a vulnerability to begin with and then things proceed from there when there is an opening, a void, through self-neglect, self-criticism, or a weakening from victimization. In a weakened state, there will be a void that the darkness can fill and take over a person and reduce them further. At some point the consciousness of a person may well choose to leave and then death of the body will ensue. That is always a hollow victory because it will never give a lasting reward to the darkness, and this is in keeping with its very nature in being a downward trajectory, a downward spiral, a lessening of divinity through an aggregate of dark intentions. Even though they might be growing in strength and power, seemingly, that negativity will be their undoing. It is only a matter of time. This will always be so.
