You have already deduced this as is inherent in your questions. It is consciousness they need to have to persist. It is the erosion of their consciousness through time and disconnection from Creator that puts them at risk of perishing. Consciousness is an energy, and energy cannot be destroyed but it can be dissipated, and this can result in the dissolution of the being as a functioning unit with autonomy and with a certain makeup and soul integrity to persist throughout time. This does not happen in a vacuum, but in concert with Creator and Creator’s consciousness, so there is some general life-giving force to support the consciousness and its explorations.
This is somewhat akin to the concept of inertia in physics and the concept of the increase in entropy through time, as there is the possibility of loss of coherence if there is no application of the energy to a purpose. So this is the deciding factor at hand in whether a spirit will be healthy and invigorated or in decline and in danger of reaching a point of no return with loss of functional integrity and then the energy will be dispersed in such a way it cannot be reclaimed and re-utilized purposefully by the original being.
