This is a perceptive insight that is quite true in the case of flashbacks, which are a sudden triggering of memory, often without a predisposing event. Although a similar experience in the current life can well arouse something linked by a cording to cause the memory to emerge into conscious awareness, this explains particularly well the experiencing of memories popping up out of the blue, which torment a person. Their description of this happening is a very clear demonstration there is a part of the mind below conscious awareness giving rise to that recall that proves to be painful.
