They attribute it to some mysterious power, probably from the fans watching the game, so their consciousness has an influence at key moments and thwarts their ability to make bad things happen. It becomes a kind of protective energy. This they do not fully understand and would keenly like to figure out, but that does not mean they will accept a loss. In this case, they did exactly as you wondered, they found another way to doom the Lions' chances of getting further by keeping them out of the playoffs through orchestrating the loss of a key opponent, and that kept them out of the playoffs in the end, anyway.
