We see this as not being as severe a risk for dogs compared to human as dogs have better defenses against viruses because they have had less tinkering with their immune systems genetically to downgrade them. But again, in general, this is only a need for young animals so, in all likelihood, a safe source of a substitute dairy product can be used if mother's milk is not available. But milk is not necessary to give adult animals and, in fact, lactose intolerance is a characteristic of adult canines and they may not tolerate much milk in their diet.
