We see this as being safe to ingest. Whether it is necessary is an open question because it will depend on the individual and whether they have other sources of zinc in their diet that are bioavailable and resulting in appropriate tissue levels needed for healthy functioning of the body. In general, there is widespread dietary insufficiency of zinc. So, as with many such things, it is better safe than sorry, all other things being equal. This is why many supplements are promoted; they may not be universally essential, but for many individuals are a blessing.
