There are many things that are a potential time bomb or simply a fruitless exercise that, indeed, are promoted by the extraterrestrials with their programming of humans. They have corrupted all your institutions to do both kinds of mischief and, as a result, many programs doing research to probe new avenues and guidelines are promulgated based on false assumptions that they will be fruitful and bring value in some way when, in fact, there is a poison pill and a long-term downside that might even be life-shortening from unexpected adverse consequences. Just as often there will be a well-meaning initiative that is simply designed to fail but might require an enormous effort and considerable funding and go on for years with people believing in it and backing it to the hilt but, in the end, will have nothing to show for it. The common term for this is "government boondoggle" but happens in private industry every bit as commonly as large-scale bureaucrat endeavors of all kinds. We cannot lead here in revealing much about the potentials for benefit or harm, other than to say tinkering with life is not a good idea for humans to engage in. We understand the attractions of science; after all, we made humans to be curious, but a fascination with the forbidden, and a passion to pursue it, is usually not a normal expression of human yearnings but a corruption.
