The increased automation works against society by reducing the need for human workers and people are increasingly finding themselves sidelined by life, and that will only increase through the advent of artificial intelligence. This has led to the modern phenomenon of children living in their parents' homes even into middle age, so there is much less independent thinking and toughening up provided by society with the indulging of the young, and that is a kind of enabling to diminish them. So this is more a cultural phenomenon imparted by a sinister manipulation creating this striking difference in seeming maturity of young people in a past era compared to the current population.
