You are free to do preparation in a way that feels best to you. The meditative exercise, through the imagery given in the Protocol, is simply designed to be generic and has helped many individuals with an intuitive reach achieve the state of consciousness that facilitates intuitive perceptions by allowing the brainwave frequencies to fall into the alpha-theta range. As you point out, if you are not planning or intending to get intuitive feedback, there is no compelling need to go to the extra trouble to achieve a meditative state of contemplation. Whatever state of mind will help you feel calm and open to connecting to Creator of All That Is, will work just fine for you. The key is to always ask for safety, and do the work when you are in a calm, relaxed, state of mind that enables you to focus on each step of the Protocol in turn, without the mind wandering needlessly and distracting you with other concerns. If that happens, you can simply redirect your focus back to the Protocol, so it will not necessarily be a problem, but the key is to give every step of the Protocol its due with a proper focus of attention. That is what provides the driving force for the divine outreach. It comes through the intention of the practitioner. So if that is fleeting, superficial, temporary, or irregular, from being interrupted constantly with wandering thoughts, or being in a great hurry and being preoccupied with something else needing to be done, there can be compromise of the work in its effectiveness. So those are the major considerations here. Any preliminaries that will help you be calm and focused for the duration will be effective and are acceptable.
