DWQA QuestionsCategory: Coronavirus COVID-19A story was recently posted on the Internet about a dog that tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. Was that fake news, an actual infection, a false test result, or reflecting that the dog was harboring the virus as a carrier but not symptomatic? If the latter, how susceptible are canines to developing a carrier state?

We have told you before that dogs are not susceptible to this virus and that means they will not acquire an infectious level of organisms in their body with or without symptoms, and they will not become carriers either, as the first must happen to allow the latter. This does not mean dogs cannot become a vector from being around someone shedding the virus in their exhalations and secretions, either airborne or on their hands, or by the animal rubbing against a contaminated surface and picking up some virus particles. But true full-blown illnesses in these animals by this pandemic agent will not be observed.
