There is a popular notion that one should never give advice unless asked for it. A high school student who worked in a repair garage evenings and weekends was in an auto shop class and instructed to do an oil change with a small group of fellow students. One of the bigger more aggressive students started removing the drain plug. The experienced student suggested that he not pull the plug away but hold it in place until he was sure it was loose, and then pull it away quickly. The intended and very over-confident recipient of this wise advice told the experienced student to “buzz off” in so many words, and then proceeded to cover himself in oil with the other students howling with laughter. What is Creator’s perspective on giving unsolicited advice?

Pushing back against one’s own emotions and habits is usually countered by the deep subconscious with even more intense emotion and anxiety. Marshalling inner strength seems an almost inexplicable outcome of excessive irrational behavior. At what point does the deep subconscious finally relent and ease off in response to a newly determined self, no longer willing to accept such emotions uncritically? Is it simply a bigger trauma overwhelming a smaller one, or is it the long-in-coming birth of wisdom?

A student asks: “I have a good lifelong friend. Our relationship has gotten more challenging lately as he clearly feels a deep need to counter almost every argument and value position I hold. Some of his positions are not well thought out, and our conversations involve my trying to assist him in really logically thinking through and examining some of the contradictions in his arguments.
