It reminds me of HUAC, the House Un-American Activities Committee of the 1950s and 60s. Congress was engaged in regular witch-hunts promoted by the political right wing, convinced there was dangerous infiltration by communists and their sympathizers. Both look to me to be the same madness, basically delusional in their exaggerations, but destroying reputations and careers of all those targeted.
