Bad behavior meeting instant justice is like gawking at a train wreck—you know it’s terrible, but you can’t help looking at it. Of course, part of the reason it’s compelling to look at is that there is no direct sharing in the pain of the experience. In the military, the practice of punishing an entire platoon for the aberrant behavior of a single recruit or draftee has been discovered to work well in reducing such behavior across the entire group.
