Instead of threatening to play tricks, however, they’d pray for the souls of peoples’ departed loved ones in return for the cake. Again we see the act of praying for the dead, in essence performing “Spirit Rescues” made a form of tradition to ensure that at least one time during the year, the dead were “remembered” and prayers said on their behalf.
