Is age-related macular degeneration, a major cause of vision impairment and blindness, caused by chronic virus infection, and if so, in what percent of cases?

Is vision impairment and blindness due to diabetic retinopathy caused by the damaging effects of high blood sugar levels, or is there a damaging chronic virus infection within the eye and local tissues? If so, in what percent of cases is the latter a major factor?

Recounted from Sciencedirect.com, in 1959, an 18-year-old woman was blinded by juvenile macular degeneration over a three-month period, and was without vision for more than 12 years. In 1972, both she and her husband performed an impassioned prayer asking for her vision to be restored “that night.” Her husband prayed out loud, “Oh God! You can restore (her) eyesight tonight Lord. I know You can do it! And I pray You will do it tonight.” At the close of the prayer, his wife opened her eyes and saw her husband kneeling in front of her, which was her first clear visual perception in 13 years. She has had 20/20 vision ever since. A study concluded, “While a placebo effect cannot be ruled out … it is not clear how the visual acuity could be improved via placebo.” Can Creator comment?
