DWQA QuestionsCategory: Coronavirus COVID-19How effective are the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, and the booster shots, against the Omicron variant?

There is a significantly reduced effectiveness consistent with the many breakthrough cases, but that is not the whole story. A major factor in the frequency with which people are becoming infected with the Omicron strain, who have been vaccinated and received a booster shot in the bargain, is the fact that the Omicron strain is being spread with greater vigor, at higher exposure levels through a more intense delivery of viral particles into the environment in key ways to infect many people quickly, with a level of exposure that will cause many to develop symptoms even though this is a less severe pathogen. But this is all to the good, that the virus is a weaker variant, and even though it can be delivered at higher levels to partially offset this, the vast majority of COVID-19 cases with the Omicron variant are mild, requiring relatively little hospitalization and with a low death toll.
