They were present because of his particular energies, and he attracted these because of his intuitive outreach into their realm. There was the additional factor of his being an unusual individual energetically and karmically as well. So this made him somewhat of a curiosity when he showed up within another dimension and they simply followed him back to his physical self and took up residence, much as spirits will do when they have an entrée. These were not a major negative influence on him and had no role in his crimes or his personal shortcomings that made him vulnerable to his criminal past. They were more an incidental finding.
