You are perceiving this accurately, that there are parts of your mind that are skeptical, more doubtful, and more negative, and more demanding as well, and want to have authority and be recognized to, in effect, have control over things. The overall goal of the ego is safety and security, and that is why it tends to overreact and overdemand in seeking flattery and exaggerated gestures of reassurance and praise from others. But usually, such excesses are not deeply felt but simply rendered because of an awareness it is being expected, and a kind of demand in order to be accepted by the recipient and those who indulge a person’s ego, are also seeking security and acceptance and only doing what seems necessary to stay in the good graces of an individual. But flattery is often a hollow gesture because it is done in response and service to the lesser part of a person, and will often be perceived as a kind of self-indulgence even though people are acquiescing to the expectation they will be pampered and praised.
