Of the two, while incarnated here, Jesus had the more public mission than his mother, Mary, where she appears to have had an almost dedicated role of behind the scenes support for his mission. Was that truly the arrangement? Did Jesus require a mother without her own karmic backlog, or was that simply a privilege he had karmically earned in earlier lives, one that would make his anticipated difficult mission life, more tolerable?

Both of these things are true. He was given the benefit of a wonderful family setting to present no inordinate obstacles and to have support he could count on, both by virtue of an important mission life being underway as well as having earned the distinction to have an important mission of prominence to be supported by the divine realm, but with a minimum of obstacles and liabilities that would be posed by less than perfect family and parents. Such influences, particularly at a young age, can derail a normal life and cause lifelong restrictions that can be quite severe and damaging. For example, if infants are not loved unreservedly by the parents, it will take a toll on their ability to function. So Jesus Christ was doubly blessed having the mother he enjoyed.
