Even getting both blood sugar levels and blood pressure controlled within normal limits using prescription drugs will not fundamentally change the course of diabetes. Whatever the body is vulnerable to experience will play out. Some people are more resistant and resilient than others, so there is always a range of severity from never being diagnosed, even over the course of a lifetime despite the presence of the offending viruses, to those who exhibit a full gamut of symptoms and tissue injury including end-stage renal disease that can be fatal, and quite horrifying peripheral neuropathy and necrosis of the extremities severe enough to necessitate amputation.
