Here again, is a rather simplistic notion of how to solve your problems. Self-reliance is a demonstration of inner strength and capability, but how is that going to help someone who lacks inner strength and capability to begin with? They will not have the wherewithal to simply use inner reflection to sort out and hone an inner knowing about what is needed to be successful and happy in life and put that into action in all the ways needed to bring real benefits their way. What you are saying is akin to creating a system where children are simply released outdoors at a certain age, to fend for themselves, so they are no longer attending any kind of formal schooling or even getting consistent parenting for guidance and learning to grow their knowledge base—that is substituting one imperfect system for another.
Government-run schools are not the best solution for educational needs, but the fact that such institutions fall down in their obligation to deliver the goods does not mean there is no need for such outside teaching to help people learn and grow most efficiently. The whole of the human enterprise, and indeed all groups of soul-based beings, is the communal sharing of knowledge as well as responsibility for what takes place and how a civilization is best organized, governed, and helped to grow while managing the inevitable conflicts that arise from differing interests, goals, and desires of the individual participants. There needs to be an overarching set of principles and that must be taught, ideally, rather than leaving it to every individual or every generation to start from scratch and become civilized on their own.
What you are proposing is a prescription for imposed limitation and mediocrity. It is the intellectual equivalent of the New Age practice of meditation, when defined as "contemplating one's navel to ignore and push away all thoughts," as though that would accomplish something of great value. Looking into a vacuum for answers can become engaging and even a passion but will not be fruitful.
